Education Committee

THE WORLD METHODIST COUNCIL
WMC-EC11/02
Dear members, partners, and friends of the WMC Education Committee,
Last year, around this time, we were receiving the news about a devastating earthquake in Haiti. Later, there was another earthquake in Chile. We shared news about the situation, especially how these catastrophes haad affected the Wesleyan and Methodist communities in those areas. This year, was many of us reflected and participated in moments reviewing and evaluating the first year after the earthquake in Haiti, we heard the sad news about another natural catastrophe, this time in Brazil. Our Methodist brothers and sisters are there as well, as both victims and first responders. I would like to share a recent letter from Bishop Paulo Lockmann, Bishop of Rio de Janeiro and Vice-President of the World Methodist Council.
Dear brothers and sisters,
Grace and Peace!

As I experience one of the most challenging moments of my ministerial life, I wish to share with you the pain our people are suffering. We continue counting the number of dead and those who lost their homes. Just in the Central Church in Teresópolis there are 87 being sheltered. Our churches on the hills around Rio de Janeiro are still standing and being used as places to shelter many families. We need everything: water, food, and clothing, so that we may diminish the suffering of those victimized and homeless.
The facts and figures are not clear yet, but two neighborhoods in Teresópolis pratically disappeared: Calembe and Posse. In Nova Friburgo the situation is not different, and in Petrópolis the pastoral house for Pastor Neliel in Cuiabá was lost [was washed away by the mudslides]. He and his family are doing well, but 40 members of his congregation and 100 other people in the neighborhood of Cuiabá died.
Those who wish to help can do so by donating their funds to the following accounts of the Central Methodist Churches in Teresópolis, Petrópolis and Nova Friburgo.

Your in Christ,
Bispo Paulo Lockmann

Estimados/as irmãos/irmãs

Bispo Paulo Lockmann
